model blocks Overview

Thanks to everyone for your ideas, suggestions and feedback. The Model Blocks initiative is the result of the 2005 Shared Vision process—a community led planning effort. This initiative has evolved, and continues to evolve with community input.

Model Blocks attempts to introduce planning on Main Street, where none has existed before, to tackle questions raised in the 2005 visioning discussions, such as:

  • Is Main Street clean?
  • Do we like the appearance of parking lots? sidewalks? rear facades?
  • Is local commerce thriving?
  • Is parking and traffic acceptable?
  • Is architecture reflective of our charming waterfront and maritime history?
  • Could alternative zoning enhance downtown areas?

What are the goals of the Model Blocks initiative? It’s Port’s first effort to create a master plan for Main Street. The plan starts with just four blocks centered close to the LIRR station, promoting a more walkable Main Street, with architecture that feels unique to Port Washington at village scale and character with mechanisms to increase funding to building owners to help with updates and amenities. The proposal takes a very cautious approach to creating modernized housing for young adults and seniors, increasing pedestrian activity and giving local commerce a boost.

RESIDENTS has received a lot of valuable comments since presenting the initial draft to the community on November 17th and has made revisions accordingly.

We believe that change, while necessary, must be well thought out. Our community seeks to stay vital while allowing for change that enhances our character and sense of place. To achieve this, planning is needed. We all agreed at our 2005 Shared Visioning workshops that Main Street needed our attention—the Model Blocks initiative is our attempt at realizing that goal. We all want to move slowly, but we believe that now is the time to start working on these issues.

Councilwoman De Giorgio has graciously agreed to convene a community-wide committee to further study Model Blocks.  She has made this matter a priority and is actively seeking input from all segments of the community. RESIDENTS applauds Councilwoman De Giorgio’s commitment to this matter, her leadership and the process that she is implementing. We look forward to participating in that process and encourage each of you to offer your insights and perspectives, as well.

As Model Blocks continues to evolve, we look forward to continuing the dialogue. We will do our best to serve as a clearinghouse for information.
